We hope you’re enjoying the last few days of summer. We’re preparing for staff meetings on August 16th in preparation for the upcoming year. We are eagerly anticipating the arrival of our students for fall sports practice and greeting our new and returning families at New Student/Parent Orientation, The Back to School Picnic, and Registration/Book Buy.
Sunday, August 22, 2010 from 4:00 to 5:30 PM – New Student/Parent Orientation
Sunday, August 22, 2010 from 5:30 to 8:00 PM – All School Picnic
Monday, August 23, 2010 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM – Registration and Book Buy
Opening Day Questions
Yes, school really does begin on Wednesday, August 25th at 8:00 AM.
Q. When will my child have his/her schedule?
A. Most students should have their schedules by August 10th which they can see via their Edline page. New students will receive their schedules at Registration.
Q. When will my child get his/her books and get a locker?
A. Your child will be issued a locker at registration, and you will have the opportunity to buy your child’s books on Monday, August 23rd at Book Buy if you opted to not do so online earlier this summer..
Grades 7 & 8 – 5:00 to 6:00 PM
Grades 9 & 10 – 6:00 to 7:00 PM
Grades 11 & 12 – 7:00 to 8:00 PM
Your child was issued a book list, and you will be able to buy all of the books for your child’s classes on that day if you chose to buy them through Crossroads College Prep. Some books may be back ordered by the publisher—this happens every year—but if books are back ordered, we will get them to your child as soon as they arrive. Although we attempt to keep the price of books down, and Lisa Straub looks far and wide for the best deals she can find, you should know that buying books can be expensive. The average book bills for each grade are as follows:
7th grade – $650 to $850
8th grade – $525 to $650
9th grade – $600 to $750
10th grade – $450 to $600
11th grade – $550 to $900
12th grade – $800 to $900
The book bills depend on the class schedules of the students and the availability of used books. If you are a family that chose to purchase your books on line, please know that you will still need to attend Registration/Book Buy. There will be additional charges that are usually on your book buy bill, such as field trip costs and lab fees that you are responsible for and forms to be completed.
Q. When should my child arrive for school?
A. Classes begin at 8:00 AM, but the school is open at 7:15 AM, and students should allow themselves enough time to go to their lockers and get to classes before 8:00 PM.
Students may be dropped off and picked up in one of three areas: at the south end of the building off Kingsbury Avenue, in front of the school in the main drop off/pick up lane, and at the north end of the building in the student parking lot. The student parking lot on the north end of the building is always the most crowded and best to be avoided if you can use one of the other two locations. Kingsbury Avenue may be accessed by taking Pershing Avenue east from DeBaliviere, turning left on Clara, and turning left on Kingsbury Avenue. Students may walk up the sidewalk to the main entrance of the building. The main drop off/pick up lane can be accessed directly off of DeBaliviere. Please pull as far forward as possible when dropping off or picking up your child. Please note that you may only turn right onto DeBaliviere as you are leaving the school. If you choose to drop your child off in the north parking lot, please pull as far forward as possible, and please be careful when exiting the lot; when leaving the lot, we discourage turning left onto DeBalivere for safety reasons. Students should be cautious and alert at all times when exiting or entering vehicles.
Q. What are the hours for school?
A. The hours of school are 8:00 AM to 3:10 PM with some activities, including upper school athletic practices and play rehearsal occuring after school. Middle school activities, such as Art Club and Drama Club will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:10 until 4:00 or 4:30 PM.
New Student Questions
Q. Do I, as my child’s parent, really need to attend the new student/parent/guardian orientation on Sunday, August 22nd from 4:00-5:30 PM.
A. Yes. At new student/parent/guardian orientation, we explain many elements of life at Crossroads College Preparatory School, so please make it a point to not only send your child to this event, but also to have at least one parent/guardian attend.
Q. What about middle school athletics?
A. Middle school students take physical education or practice a sport three times a week. Athletic Director Bob Beatrice will explain the middle school physical education and interscholastic program at new student/parent/guardian orientation.
Q. Will there be a middle school overnight beginning the first day of school?
A. Yes, there is a middle school overnight. It is Wednesday through Friday, August 25th-August 27th, with students returning to school on the afternoon of the 27th. This trip is one of THE events of our middle school program and helps jump start the formation of a new community, created between our returning 8th graders and our new students, hailing from many different schools. Families need to know much more about how to pack and what forms to fill out, all of which will be discussed in detail at the new student/parent orientation.
