· Individual medals: 10

The Chess Team is a good representation of the school’s student body. 62% of the chess team receives financial aid compared to the school’s 47% of the student body receiving aid, proving that chess is an all around sport that is good for children on all levels from different backgrounds. It becomes a common language that the kids can speak to one another.

A number of the chess team’s members are playing chess for the first time. Dr. Howard Granok, Chess Team Coach says, “Students get turned on to chess for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is because their friends are playing the game, sometimes they dabbled in the game in their previous school but would like to learn more. The great thing about interscholastic chess in our area is that every player has the opportunity to play, regardless of their experience and ability. Besides their coach (me), students can learn a lot about the game from their peers and from older students. It really helps build a very cohesive team.”

Essence Lee, Crossroads College Preparatory School Class of 2014,
Wins State of Missouri Poetry Out Loud Competition
March 14, 2013 ~ Essence Lee, CCPS Class of 2014, wins State of Missouri Poetry Out Loud Competition and moves on to the national competition in Washington, DC.
Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country. Poetry Out Loud was created in partnership by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation with the collaboration of State Arts Agencies as a way to foster the next generation of literary readers by building on the resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam poetry movement and the popularity of rap music.
Doctors Without Housing – 3 Crossroads College Prep Alumnae Work to Build Facilities for Visiting Volunteer Physicians in Peru

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Heather Lake (314) 367-8085, ext. 202 heather@crossroadscollegeprep.org

In 2007, the Yantaló Foundation asked film producer/director Angela Snow (Crossroads College Prep Class of 2003) to create a documentary film about their foundation, the construction of a medical clinic it was sponsoring, and the conditions of healthcare in their Peruvian town.

After working on the film, Angela invited her classmates to Peru to learn more about the foundation. At the time, Laura Jay (Crossroads College Prep Class of 2003) was working at the U.S. Green Building Council in Washington, D.C., and has since completed her master’s degree in urban planning from Columbia University. Margaret van Bakergem (Crossroads College Prep Class of 2003) was completing her master’s degree in public health at Washington University after graduating from The College of Charleston.

The young women traveled to Peru and quickly recognized to recruit visiting physicians, volunteer housing would be needed. Thus, The Yantaló International Volunteer Organization, a 501(c)3 organization, was created by this group of young women along with five other volunteers serving the Yantaló community. The mission of the organization is “to support individuals from all over the world in their desire to volunteer their time and skills in the Yantaló community by building comfortable housing and provide a supportive, enriching environment, including space for short- and long-term housing, volunteer meetings, and planning space.” Since its inception in 2009, land has been donated for the volunteer housing site and money is being raised to bring the project to fruition.

When asked how their time as students at Crossroads College Prep influenced them in choosing their fields and ultimate work, Laura Jay, responds, “Crossroads always instilled in us the importance of using one’s interests to create a better world. Our work in Yantaló is doing just that, through our skills in film, health, and sustainability we are bringing resources to an area of Peru that is greatly in need.”

Laura currently lives in New York City and works at a sustainability consulting firm Terrapin Bright Green. Angela also lives in New York and works freelance on documentaries and TV production. Margaret lives in Nashville and researches public health issues for The Department of Pediatrics at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The three Crossroads alumnae not only are raising funds for the house, but they are also developing a robust program and are working with St. Louis University, Washington University, University of Wisconsin and other major univerisities around the country supporting the work being done in Yantaló. The organization is currently in the middle of a flash fundraising campaign to raise enough to complete the first phase of construction on the house. To read more about the organization and the volunteer house, please visit www.YantaloVolunteerHouse.org .

Junior Tess Couper was named 2nd Team All-Conference by being a model of consistency on the court. Newcomer, freshman Rachel Peth was recognized as Honorable Mention All-Conference and was the only freshman to be named by the SCAA. Wilson, a standout all season, was also named 2nd Team All-District for her play in the playoffs.

The CCPS Boys’ Soccer team had another fantastic season finishing second in the SCAA with an 8-2 conference record. Senior Riley Corbett did a solid job in the midfield while junior Benton Birch was the anchor of a strong defense, both were named 2nd Team All-Conference.

Please check out these photos of kids from Afghan orphanages who received portraits our students painted of them. Grace Anne, Wolf, Eric, Zee, Annie Ta, and Kelsey worked really hard last spring in Portraiture to create these beautiful gifts.
Some appreciative quotes:
Andeisha Farid, the primary director of the orphanages, recently wrote "I have to mention this to you that it brought cheers in my head watching the children receiving their portraits. They are all very, very happy receiving their portraits. It was just amazing."
Shamsia Razaqi, co-founder of an all boys orphanage wrote, "The boys were thrilled to see the portraits which were absolutely beautiful! We can not thank you enough for this wonderful gift!!"
http://www.memoryproject.org/
Crossroads College Prep Sophomore In Top 1% of Chess Players in the Nation

Matthew Larson, Crossroads College Prep sophomore and chess stand out, played in the 2012 Missouri Open Chess Cahmpionships where he tied for first with two grandmasters from Webster Univeristy.

This accopmlishment puts Matthew in the top 1% among junior chess players in the nation and among the top 5% of players of all ages in Missouri. This also makes Matthew unoffically an Expert chess player.

Since 7th grade, Matthew has been a key member of the Crossroads College Prep Chess Team, winning the 9th grade Missori State Championship in 2011 and finishing in 2nd place in the high school division in 2012 as a freshman. Matthew is the captain of the Crossroads College Prep Chess team this year. He has been playing chess since he was in elementary school at New City School and plays regularly at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center in St. Louis.

The Crossroads College Prep Chess team finished in 3rd place in two different divisions at the Chess Nationals last spring. Due to Matthew’s high chess rating, he played in a separate division where he finished with a 5-2 record, including a victory over chess Expert, Awonder Liang.

Nearly 20% of the Crossroads College Prep student body participates in the chess program.

Crossroads College Prep will be hosting an elementary school chess tournament on October 13, 2012. Players in grades K-6 can sign up by contacting Dr. Howard Granok at Crossroads College Prep at howard@crossroadscollegeprep.org.

Diversity, Great School, and Pervasive Sense of Mission

On Tuesday September 18th, Grant Lichtman visited Crossroads College Prep School. He is on a tour of 60+ schools in the US investigating “how leading educators are implementing significant change to meet 21st century challenges”. He visited only four schools in St. Louis. While with us, he met with a small group of seniors, and a handful of teachers and administrators to ask how we approach innovation. Below is what we he had to say about CCPS. Follow him on his tour by visiting his blog http://learningpond.wordpress.com/grant-lichtman.

Diversity Means Erasing Many Lines That Divide Us at Crossroads Prep, St. Louis

September 20, 2012 by Grant Lichtman

Great schools have a clear mission that is known and shared by faculty, students, and administration. I have visited schools with a variety of missions, but I may never have been at a school with a more pervasive sense of mission than at Crossroads Prep in St. Louis. At Crossroads, from the Head down to every student I talked with, the mission is diversity, but in a different way than you might think.

Many schools, particularly independent schools, tout their diversity statistics, and for good reason. Since America remains a largely segregated society, neighborhood-centric public schools largely reflect their racially, ethnically, and economically divided neighborhoods. Many independent schools draw families from a range of zip codes, and this is certainly the case at Crossroads. According to Head Clark Daggett, Crossroads is one of the most racially and economically diverse schools in the region, with 45% African American student body; nearly half of students receive some form of financial assistance to attend; yet tuition is less than other top St. Louis independent schools. I have done extensive research on the relationship of economic diversity at a school to tuition and other budget drivers, and those numbers make Crossroads a real outlier. The answer is clearly a shared belief in the mission. Simply, teachers work for lower than benchmark salaries because they share in the mission of the school.

At Crossroads, this commitment to empathy as
core to mission is the clear reason for their success.

The idea of diversity here goes way beyond skin color, and it starts with the location of the campus, on the very real boundary of traditionally white and non-white areas of a “balkanized” St. Louis landscape. Clark believes the mission of the school is to blur these lines of division, be they racial, economic, philosophical or other. They don’t just tout their student diversity; they raise it up and use it as a lever to very intentionally teach students how to get beyond the lines that divide us. Importantly, I heard the EXACT same thing from teachers I talked with. And when I got to spend almost an hour with a group of seniors, their description of what makes Crossroads special came back to these same ideas of embracing, celebrating, and understanding diversity of thought, opinion, culture, and so much more. Many of these students come from miles away and could have attended any of the other prestigious St. Louis prep schools, but chose Crossroads in order to learn and share in an ethos of erasing lines.

I spent time with Mark Norwood, dean of students and Director of Ethics and Social Responsibility (how many times this last two weeks have I blogged about someone with a title, a responsibility, that your school does not have?). He talked about how the school physically sits at a crossroads of race and money, and how the modest buildings attract people who feel comfortable without trappings. They don’t want to sit back; they want to be highly intentional about what diversity means and the strength it wields. They are building the case for students that each individual is in control of themselves and the connections that create their place and future beyond school. They have developed opportunities both within the standard curriculum and outside of normal classes for students and faculty to learn and share specific skill and mindset tools, and to keep this ethos high in their collective consciousness. Their Good Works program of community engagement now includes nearly 20 partner non-profits. Like Latin School of Chicago and others I have visited, these partnerships involve much more than students going to work in a soup kitchen. In programs like Crossroads, what students do off campus follows them back to school, and back into the classroom, in terms of research, discussion, and reflection.

In the full period I had to sit down and talk with students, the one quote that sticks out is this: “Teachers here get it.” All of these students are prepping for college and they know they need a solid foundation in core subject knowledge base. But what lit up for all of them were the projects, long discussions, and tangential programs that are embedded so deeply in classroom activities. They said that their teachers try to update curriculum in real time, staying aware of what is going on in the world outside of school walls. They cited teachers who will deviate strongly from regular curriculum to focus on a major current event and weave that into the lesson plan over days or weeks. In addition to basic communication skills, they said what is going to help them most in their futures is the ability to apply content knowledge, and to work and communicate comfortably with adults. They will need to ask good questions and know when and how to ask for help. They all talked about the large group projects at all grade levels, many of which are discussion-based, where they are learning to find, filter, and apply connected thinking to real world problems. As we summed up, though, and I asked the students the real key that differentiates Crossroads from the other schools their friends attend, they all agreed: the diverse representation of background, and intentional openness to many points of view.

My meeting with a group of faculty was equally important. This is, after all, a college prep school, and they continue to feel the tension of a traditional AP-focused program that can often stand in the way of innovation that many would like to see. But they find a way around it, as they have other dividing lines. The faculty told me that what they do best is “retail teaching”, creating that 1:1 student-teacher relationship of authentic connection. They feel this trumps the tension of what might be taught, be it AP or something of a deeper nature. In a separate meeting, Clark echoed this same focus. To paraphrase Clark, pedagogy, programs, and technology are all important, but the key to Crossroads, or perhaps any educational success, is the relationship between each teacher and each student. He used a word, empathy, which comes up at so many of my school visits: the ability to reduce the distance between people. At Crossroads, this commitment to empathy as core to mission is the clear reason for their success.

The above pictures were taken during our Good Work day at City Seeds on September 27th. Some of the students appear in more than one picture. Pictured are Jas Bradley, Brooke Beatrice, Aliyah Wilson, Zoe Call, Jess Harry, Sam Buchholz, Darian Randle, Chloe Seyer, Zee Fowler, Val Warren, Eliana Zuckerman, Tova Cohen, Sifan Wang, T.J. Hughes, Hoben Rehfeld, Zane Spencer, and Spanish teacher Jad McDaniel.
